Ranieri donates prize to ALS research

Claudio Ranieri will donate his Bearzot Prize money to ALS research, revealed Stefano Borgonovo’s daughter.
It was announced today that the Leicester City manager will be given the Premio Bearzot in a ceremony in Rome on Monday.

The prize is “for confirming, in this season even more than the others, his extraordinary qualities as a teacher of football and restless motivator, proving how a cohesive group can achieve important results despite the absence of so-called top players.”

The award, named after 1982 World Cup winner Enzo Bearzot, goes to Italian Coaches and last year the recipient was Max Allegri.
Along with the prize is €5,000 and Ranieri will donate it to research into ALS – Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gherig’s Disease.
It is a devastating muscular degenerative condition that primarily affects former athletes, including ex-Genoa and Fiorentina star Borgonovo.
“Ranieri will donate the monetary part of the Bearzot Prize to ALS research,” announced Borgonovo’s daughter Alessandra.

“The Leicester manager’s decision caught us by surprise and we are truly honoured. We are very happy that he remembered us and the fight my father put up against this disease.
“Ranieri visited my father at home once to support him during his illness. At that time he also offered to take care of training for the football school that day.
“Few expected Leicester to win the Premier League, but his achievement shows how exceptional Ranieri is as a Coach and as a person. His decision to donate the money to our foundation also proves his sensibility off the field with regards to social issues.”
Borgonovo died in June 2013.
