Newcastle United have confirmed that French duo Gabriel Obertan and Sylvan Marveaux have left the club early by mutual consent.
The pair were due to leave the club this summer when their contracts expired, but have been released early, it was announced on the club’s website on Thursday, as preparations begin for next season – which looks increasingly like it will be in the Championship .
Both players arrived in the summer of 2011.
Marveaux, 30, was dropped from the first team after being given a second chance by Steve McClaren, having made only 57 appearances for the Magpies over five years and scoring two goals. Having now failed to impress new boss, Rafa Benitiez, there has seemed little point in keeping him on.
Obertan was also given fresh hope by Steve McClaren, under whom he made six appearances before picking up a hamstring injury. He scored just three goals in 77 appearances over the same period of time.
The club said on its official website that it wished both players the best for the future.
Newcastle are 17th in the table, just outside the relegation zone with one point's lead on Sunderland and two ahead of Norwich who have a game in hand.
