Rafael Nadal beat Joao Sousa 6-0 4-6 6-3 in a surprisingly tough encounter at the Madrid Open, setting up a semi-final clash with Andy Murray.
He and Murray met in last year's final, with the Brit winning - but since then Nadal has won both their encounters, and is currently on a 13-match winning streak.
Sousa struggled in the first set, when he could not get a game on the board, but after a downpour meant the roof was closed, he was resurgent. He saved three break points of his own before breaking Nadal and wrapping up the second set.
He could not maintain momentum into the third, though, and Nadal will move into the semi-final with his eyes on his fifth Madrid crown.
