The Spaniard, who reached the third round with an emphatic 6-3 6-0 6-3 victory over Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis, announced the news in a press conference on Friday afternoon.
The 29-year-old said he has had the problem for a couple of weeks and had an injection to try and ease the problem which has not worked.
He added: "I know that I cannot finish the tournament. It's part of life and I hope I'll come back for many years again in Roland-Garros.
" This is one of the toughest press conferences in my career, probably."
Nadal is in the top half of the draw and was due to face Marcel Granollers in the third round before potential clashes with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals and Novak Djokovic in the last four.
