The former Napoli midfielder was the captain of his national team 12 months ago but now faces a summer without tournament football, but other big names make the cut
Leicester City midfielder Gokhan Inler has been left out of Switzerland's Euro 2016 squad after struggling to make an impact for the Foxes this season.
Despite Claudio Ranieri's side winning the Premier League title, Inler made just five league appearances as N'Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater were preferred at the heart of the team's midfield.
And Inler, who began the season as captain of his national team after a series of fine performances for Napoli, has paid for his lack of game time by being left out of Vladimir Petkovic's 28-man preliminary squad.

Despite Inler's absence, there is Premier League representation in the squad with Stoke City's Xherdan Shaqiri and Watford's Valon Behrami included alongside Juventus's Stephan Lichtsteiner and Wolfsburg's Ricardo Rodriguez.
Petkovic's side - who finished second behind England in Group E of the qualifiers - will take on France, Romania and Albania in Group A this summer.
