Former Flying Eagles star Michael Dominic has urged footballers at the ongoing Junior Private Schools U-13 Soccer Challenge to put in their best during the competition.
The event, which began in Lagos on Monday, ends on June 4.
“We want to see good football and I believe the young players will give their best during the competition. Schools should prepare their teams and encourage the boys for the battle,” Dominic, a member of the Flying Eagles who placed third at the 1985 Under-20 World Cup, said.
Meanwhile, 20 schools, made up of 15 players and two coaches each, are taking part at the event.
Organiser of the event Prince Atiba said plans had been put in place to ensure a hitch-free competition, adding that cheats would be severely dealt with.
He said, “Even if you’ve played a game or two, you would still be disqualified if caught. Cheating is not good for the image of schools and they must play by the rules,” he said.
In matches played, Royal Star Comprehensive College hammered Taqwa High School 4-0, Vicsum College beat Al Miyzan College 4-1 while St. Joseph Secondary School defeated Princeton College 2-0. El Shaddai College lost 4-0 to Strong Tower Academy while St. Anthony School overcame hard-fighting Yintab Academy 2-1.
The championship is played on a knock-out basis with the top 10 teams and six best losers advancing to the second round. The defending champions are Al-Faruq College, Ejigbo.
