Paralympic champion Josef Craig has been disqualified from the 100m at the IPC European Championships - because of the tattoo of the Olympic rings on his chest.
Craig had qualified for the S8 100m final but was stopped from doing so because he had competed without covering up his tattoo - which in the IPC's regulations counts as advertising.
An IPC spokesman was quoted as saying: “Body advertising is not allowed in any way whatsoever and that includes the Olympic rings. The athlete did not wear a cover and was therefore disqualified.
“All teams are informed of the advertising policy at a technical meeting prior to competition so it wasn’t as if they had not been reminded about the rules.”
Craig will be competing in the 50m and 400m events this week - but with a cover over his tattoo.
He won the S7 400m freestyle at the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
